(398.2 McK)  Beauty:  A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley. Kind Beauty grows to love the Beast at whose castle she is compelled to and through her love releases him from the spell which has turned him from a handsome prince into an ugly beast.

(398.2 T94)  Fairy Tales of India by Lucia Turnbull. Stories include:  “The Stone Monkey”, “The Princess of the Mountain”, “A School for Crocodiles”, and many more.

(FIC Alexander, L)  The Town Cats and Other Tales by Lloyd Alexander. Eight tales featuring cats, princesses, fiddlers, cobblers, and kings.

(FIC Baker, J)  At Midnight by Jennifer Baker. A novel based on Cinderella.

(FIC Block)  The Rose and the Beast:  Fairy Tales Retold by Francesca Lia Block. Nine classic fairy tales set in modern, magical landscapes and retold with a twist.

(FIC Brooke, W)  Untold Tales by William J. Brooke. Retells and continues the stories, from a contemporary perspective, of which classic tales as “The Frog Prince”, “Snow White”, “Beauty and the Beast”, and “Sleeping Beauty”.

(FIC Haddix)  Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix. In this continuation of the Cinderella story, 15 year old Ella finds that accepting Prince Charming’s proposal ensnares her in a suffocating tangle of palace rules and royal etiquette, so she plots to escape.

(FIC Levine)  Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. In this novel based on the story of Cinderella, Ella struggles against the childhood curse that forces her to obey any order given to her.

(FIC MacDonald, G)  At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald. The adventures of a little boy, named for his father’s favorite horse, as he travels with the beautiful lady North Wind and comes to know the many facets of her protective and violent temper.

(FIC McKinley)  Spindle’s End by Robin McKinley. The infant princess Briar Rose is cursed on her name day by Pernicia, an evil fairy, and then whisked away by a young fairy to be raised in a remote part of a magical country, unaware of her real identity and hidden from Pernicia’s vengeful powers.

(FIC Napoli)  Spinners by Donna Jo Napoli. Elaborates on the events recounted in the fairytale “Rumpelstiltskin”, in which a strange little man helps a miller’s daughter spin straw into gold for the king on the condition that she will give him her first-born child.

(FIC Pattou, E)  East by Edith Pattou. A young women journeys to a distant castle on the back of a great white bear who is the victim of a cruel enchantment.

(FIC Pratchett)  The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett. A talking cat, intelligent rats, and a strange boy who cooperate in a Pied Piper scam until they try to con the wrong town and are confronted by a deadly evil rat king.

(FIC Richardson, B)  After Hamelin by Bill Richardson. A Pied Piper tale retold.

(FIC Wilde, O)  The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde. A beautiful, golden, jewel-studded statue and a little swallow give all they have to help the poor.

(FIC Wrede, P)  Talking to Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede. Queen Cimorene sends her 16 year old son, Daystar, into the Enchanted Forest with the only weapon that can combat an evil wizard’s magic in an effort to restore the balance of power in the kingdom.

(FIC Yolen, J)  Briar Rose by Jane Yolen. Rebecca searches for Briar Rose’s castle in the sleeping woods and finds the secret of her grandmother’s past rooted in Poland and the Holocaust.
